Hamilton’s MRKTBOX Achieves B Corp Certification
Joins the ranks of Patagonia and other like-minded corporations as an agent for change.
Hamilton, Sept 9, 2022 -- MRKTBOX INC. announced today that it is now certified as a B Corporation by the non-profit organization, B Lab. Certified B Corporations are for-profit companies that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability, in order to balance profit and purpose.
B Lab is driven by the philosophy that business can be a force for good. The hard-to-get certification assesses a for-profit company’s environmental and social performance, their transparency and their accountability. B Lab’s holistic approach to measuring a business’s impact is focused on the question of how a company creates value for non-shareholding stakeholders—from their employees, to the community, to the planet.
“We’re excited to share that we’re now part of this rarefied group,” said Justin Abbiss, co-founder of MRKTBOX, “It reconfirms values and principles that have guided our company for years, including our focus on environmental sustainability and community betterment.”
MRKTBOX achieved certification following a rigorous assessment of its entire business, with grading focused on its impact upon employees, customers, community, and environment. The certification applies to grocery delivery and all 3 stores:, Dundurn Market, Ottawa Market & Strathcona Market. Recurring audits will ensure that the company will be held accountable to the high standards, and results are publicly shared.
It took the company nearly 18 months to achieve certification. Speaking to the opportunity B Corp certification offers the grocery community, Abbiss said he believes in the power of the Consumer to drive change.
“We invite all grocery companies to join us and offer only locally grown foods when in season, prioritize organic and fair-trade products, and demand more humane animal husbandry,” he said, “By working together, we can help solve our biggest environmental and social challenges.”
But big grocery companies are unlikely to make the changes necessary to qualify, nor are they likely willing to give up any profit; . Nnone in Canada have B Corp status at this time.
The company is planning a to celebrate the milestone with a “Customer meets Suppliers” party on Sept 23rd at their Ottawa Market location. The evening will also feature a performance by local Hamilton favourites “Born in the 80s” rock band and DJ Donna Lovejoy. More information and tickets can be found on Eventbrite.com.
